Glossary of termsWhen reading about cancer and its treatment, you may encounter several words and phrases that are new to you. As you use this website to educate yourself about anemia caused by chemotherapy and Aranesp®, refer to this glossary for definitions of key terms. Anemia (ah-NEE-me-ah): a condition in which your body has fewer red blood cells than normal.4 Bone marrow (bone mar-oh): special tissue found in bone where red blood cells are made.3 Cancer (KAN-sir): a general word for abnormal cells that grow uncontrollably. Cancer cells can form tumors. But, not all tumors are cancerous.29 Cardiovascular (kar-dee-oh-vas-Q-lar): having to do with the heart and blood vessels.30 Chemotherapy (KEY-mo-ther-a-pee): drugs designed to destroy fast multiplying cancer cells.2 Darbepoetin alfa (dar-beh-POY-ee-tin AL-fa): the generic name for Aranesp®.15 Erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (EE-rith-row-po-eh-sis-stim-u-late-ing a-jent): class of drugs that stimulate bone marrow to produce red blood cells. Aranesp® is an example of an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent.8 ESA: abbreviation for erythropoiesis-stimulating agent.8 Hemoglobin (HEE-moh-glow-bin): a protein found in each red blood cell that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and organs.6 Hemoglobin level (HEE-moh-glow-bin lev-el): reflects the number of red blood cells in your body. A hemoglobin level is measured in grams per deciliter (g/dL).4,5 Protein (PRO-teen): a large molecule that is important to the cells in your body. Proteins play a key role in helping your body work normally.29 Red blood cells (red blud sells): sphere-shaped cells of the blood that contain hemoglobin. Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and organs.31 Red blood cell transfusion (red blud sell trans-few-zun): a type of treatment where blood is infused into a person through a needle and tube to rapidly increase the number of blood cells.
